We would like to look at the period of time required from the time an application for “permission of status of residence” or “application for change of status of residence” is filed with the Immigration Bureau to the time the permission is actually granted.
The Immigration Bureau website publishes the average number of days required to process residence examinations at regional immigration bureaus nationwide on a quarterly basis.

The examination period for “Change of Status of Residence” is a little shorter than that for “Authorization of Status of Residence” because the application is made by a foreign national already in Japan.
However, both applications take an average of one to three months to be approved.
These figures are only averages, so the processing time will vary for each individual case.
In some cases, permission may be granted in less time than this, while in others it may take much longer.
For example, in the case of applications for status of residence “Specified Technical Skills No. 1” or “Business Management,” etc., the number of required documents is very large, so it is especially necessary to start preparing the documents as soon as possible.
